Ross Perot tried to tell us many years ago but we just didn't listen.
The deficit is like some crazy aunt living down in the basement: everyone knows she’s there, but no one wants to talk about her. Now, if you don’t deal with her, she’s just going to get ornerier and stinkier. I say take the bitch upstairs, slap her around, and hose her down.

It's with great shame that I make this confession. I saw Redbelt this weekend. And to make matters worse, I didn't absolutely hate it. Not a good movie by any means, but not awful. I think the opinion of the general public would vary greatly from what we think of it. Not sure if this has been discussed on other message boards but I couldn't help but think this was some quasi-real life movie a la 8 Mile. Kinda curious about the relationship the Machados have with the Gracies, but it seemed almost like an indictment on the watering down of BJJ/MMA and how it's becoming a business versus the instructor's desire to keep it "pure". Anyhow, I never would have rented it but it was available on Netflix streaming so I figured what the hell.
Stay tuned for my Never Back Down review. |

I've been catching up on some movies lately.
Bigger, Stronger, Faster - Solid "B" documentary looking at the US's attitudes toward steroids. Not so much the pros and cons, but how they've burrowed into the culture and why so much emotion has been attached to them. Non-judgemental and fun to watch.
Shoot 'Em Up - B- action flick with Clive Owen stripped down to the core of some silly one-liners in between sweet ultra-violent gun battles. Pretty much unencumbered by a plot, but a hoot to watch. If you've ever wanted to see someone mow down bad guys while delivering a baby, banging a hot mediterranean wet nurse/whore, and/or skydiving, this will be worth your 90 mins.
Hamlet 2 - Solid comedy with a teacher trying too hard to put on a high school musical sequel to Hamlet. Really funny in parts, including the actual musical. "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" will stick in your head for days. |

Nate following up on the movie discussion from last night;
I see Tristan posted "Let the right one in". What were the other films you mentioned?
Here are the the recent films I thought were pretty good;
"A Prophet" Canne Grand Prix Winner for a reason.
"The air that I Breathe"
"Vengeance"
"El secreto de sus ojos" aka the secret in their eyes
"Kick Ass" Slightly disturbing flick yet best Nic Cage performance in awhile (for the same reason I thoroughly enjoyed Jennifer Anniston in Derailed)
"Bronson" been around for awhile but I just saw it on Dave's recommendation. Different, disturbing. |
